is considered one of the top accordionists in Estonia, a technical virtuoso with an astonishing ability to improvise. He has performed with numerous solo concerts, as a member of several prominent ensembles. In addition to giving concerts all over Europe, Jaak Lutsoja has performed in the United States and Russia with a very wide repertoire from a variety of genres expanding from pop-jazz to classical and contemporary music. He is a patron of Vision’s festival „Accordion in Jazz“.
Jaak Lutsoja has worked as the jazz-accordion teacher in the Heino Eller Tartu Music School and in the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy. Since the autumn of 2017, he has been teaching at the Gjestal Culture School in Norway.
Simultaneously with his career as a musician, he has also composed music and arranged several tunes for accordion. In 2010 his first solo recording „Contrarian Grooving“ was published, comprising entirely of original creations. The album has twice been nominated as the European Jazz Radio Album of the Week. In 2017, he received the title of laureate at the Estonian Theatre Year Awards for the best original music for the production of “Soo” (“The Swamp”) at the Ugala Theatre, Estonia.
Key events of the last years has been participation in the festival Cite de la music in Marseille, France, a concert with Bacau Symphony Orchestra in Rumenia, CD production called “Adios Nonino” with arrangements of Astor Piazzolla’s music - Jaak Lutsoja Quintet feat. Kersti Ala-Murr mixes tango, jazz and classical music into a savory blend. The sound of the music performed by Jaak Lutsoja Quintet is made truly special by the instruments used - accordion, bass clarinet, tablas, guitar and double bass, with an addition of classical soprano voice.
